Samsung and iFixit end partnership in providing device repair services

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Smartphone manufacturer Samsung and repair service iFixit have announced the end of their partnership in providing DIY repair services for devices.

As quoted by GSM Arena on Friday (5/24), iFixit stated that they are no longer a third-party distributor appointed for spare parts and tools, citing high spare part prices and Samsung’s design as the reasons.

According to Kyle Wiens, CEO and co-founder of iFixit, spare part prices are the main reason for the termination of the partnership.

Samsung stated that they have switched to another website called SamsungParts.com, supported by repair service provider Encompass.

The company now offers certified Samsung spare parts and equipment, as well as product information on SamsungParts.com.

The announcement of the end of the partnership between the two companies was made two years after the program debuted.

A press release from iFixit raises doubts about Samsung’s commitment to making device repairs more accessible. The company cannot provide spare parts to local repair shops at prices and quantities that are “business-wise reasonable.”

In its press release, iFixit complained about how Samsung joined the partnership for public relations purposes and stated that the South Korean company never truly intended to produce devices with easy repair access.

This independent organization will continue to offer DIY repair kits for Samsung phones as they do for Apple devices.

However, starting next month, the company will no longer have quantity limits on Samsung spare parts per repair shop per quarter.

Furthermore, although all existing information will not be removed from iFixit, the company will not directly collaborate with Samsung to develop new manuals.
